August 3th
Coast Guard Day

South Coast Lab Band will perform after the opening ceremonies and presentation of the colors: United States Coast Guard will present the colors at:  Time unknown. Sack lunches $6.00. Event sponsored by the Point Orford Heritage Society. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and join the group at Port Orford Heads State Park, located on Coast Guard Hill, Port Orford, Oregon.


August 4
U.S. Coast Guard Birthday

Thanks to President George Washington, who signed a bill creating the Revenue Cutter Service on August 4, 1790, we have the U.S. Coast Guard. The Revenue Cutter Service merged with U.S. Life-Saving Service, creating the United States Coast Guard. In 1939, the Lighthouse Service merged with the Coast Guard.



August 7
National Lighthouse Day

A number of lighthouses across the United States will be holding celebrations in honor of National Lighthouse Day, which is August 7, in honor of that date in 1789 when all lighthouses in the United States were federalized.
